Greg Wilson recently earned a pair of top-10 finishes during the rain-riddled Ohio Sprint Speedweek.
Only four nights during the nine-day stretch with the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet All Star Circuit of Champions were completed thanks to Mother Nature.
“As grueling as it is to run nine nights, I felt like we were prepared for that,” Wilson said. “We didn’t get to run some of the tracks where I felt like we’d be really competitive at like Eldora and Limaland and Sharon, but that’s part of it. It’s been a wet year and the weather has wreaked havoc on everything.”
Wilson and his Hercules Tires, DNC Hydraulics, Ohio Logistics and Gear Off Road sponsored kicked off the spectacle on June 14 at Attica Raceway Park in Attica, Ohio, where a charge from 18th to ninth place earned Wilson his ninth top 10 of the season.
“I felt like we’ve been getting a little better and going to a place like Attica where we’ve raced a lot, I’d be lying if I said I’d be happy to just get a top 10,” he said. “But to come from as far back as we did and make progress all night long, I was happy with the evening. We had a little luck and got a couple of cars because of DNFs. I felt like our car was pretty good. We’ve struggled to find a good starting balance to the night, but we’re closer than we’ve been in a long time.”
Two days later Wilson placed 21st at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio. Rain wreaked havoc to start last week with a show on Wednesday at Wayne County Speedway being the next opportunity to compete. Wilson made the dash before he capped the night with a 10th-place finish.
“Hats off to the tracks that got their shows in and that stepped up,” he said. “We changed what we did a little bit at Wayne County and had a good, solid night. I’d been okay at Wayne County throughout the years, but have never felt competitive to win the race. To have a good run there and be a little more consistent than we’ve been was a step in the right direction.”
Wayne County Speedway also hosted the Speedweek finale last Saturday. Wilson gained two positions in both a heat race and the main event to place 14th.
“It sounds crazy, but Saturday was a good night because I felt like we learned a lot,” he said. “The result didn’t show up. We changed the car for the heat race and were really good. Early in the feature we made our way through there either close to or inside the top 10. With the changes we made for the heat we probably didn’t tighten back up enough for the end of the A Main when the fuel load burned off.”
In the end, Wilson finished eighth in the Ohio Sprint Speedweek championship standings and his performance moved him up to sixth in the All Star championship standings.
The series heads to Illinois this weekend with races on Friday at Jacksonville Speedway in Jacksonville and Saturday at The Dirt Oval at Route 66 in Joliet.
